COLGATE INTRODUCES OQ

Young boy is checking Colgate OQ with oral qamera

A year ago Inspektor Research Systems started to introduce a new brand. A brand for serving the clinical and consumer markets. In this year a lot happened. We have set steps in the right direction but we have not yet reached our goal: waking up in a world without caries. Cariogenic dental plaque causes the number 1 disease in our country and elsewhere. Dental plaque does not only cause substantial damage to people’s teeth, but also takes a big cut in the available care budget. Dental caries is associated with the development of cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s diseases. We could save some 52 billion Euro annually on our healthcare costs by taking effective prevention steps.

Waking up in a caries free world.

We all want this, you might think. That is both true and untrue: although being a desired outcome by the vast majority, in day-to-day real life politicians and health insurers are still focused on curing people rather than preventing people from getting sick. And most healthcare professionals have been educated to cure diseases. Therefore, the focus of dentistry is still on filling cavities, rather than preventing cavities from developing.

Fortunately, we get support from an unexpected angle.

At the moment a number of dentists is working with Oral Qamera and more will start using this technology in the near future. We will keep you posted on which practices are joining. Right now a leading dental equipment manufacturer has decided to integrate our QLF technology into their equipment. And then there is a sudden support from an unexpected angle. Colgate introduces Oral Quotient. “Do You Know Your OQ™?” links to their website. By the way: if you want to know more about our devices, please send us an email.

Detecting young plaque with Oral Qamera.

It is only a matter of time before you can detect young dental plaque with Oral Qamera. This means that, at the end of the day, you can see whether you have brushed properly in the morning. This new Oral Qamera device works with an app to help you keeping track of your oral hygiene on a daily basis. Never fear the dentist again is just a matter of time. With this initiative from Colgate, we are one step closer.

A DUTCH INVENTION THAT WILL CHANGE THE WORLD OF DENTISTRY FOR EVER

Ask an average Dutch dentist what QLF technology is and the answer will elude him or her. When one asks the same question to a researcher form a renowned university in the field of dentistry somewhere around the world, then he will answer that QLF is seen as the golden standard in research and scientific communities. QLF has been described in over 400 scientific articles. Publications have appeared in leading journals such as the Journal of Dentistry, Caries Research, Operative Dentistry and Oral and Craniofacial Research. But also in The Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice and American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics.

THE BIGGEST INVENTIONS SINCE THE DRILL

QLF™ uses fluorescence. Fluorescence is a property of specific substances, fluorophores, that absorb light of a specific colour (wavelength) and emit light in a different colour (of a different wavelength). By blocking the light of the original colour with a filter, the fluorescent image remains. The image is created by the light that the fluorophores emit. QLF™ uses two types of fluorophores. Porphyrins that are produced by bacteria that fluoresce red, and fluorophores that are on the border of tooth enamel and dentin that fluoresce green. The red fluorescence is a measure of harmful bacterial activity and the green fluorescence shows minor damage to the tooth enamel. Combined with the special filter, this produces the QLF image. In the QLF image, the contrast between clean and infected tissue and between healthy and damaged enamel is much greater than with normal illumination. This also makes it much easier for laymen to see whether a mouth is healthy or not. Another advantage is that the degree of contamination and the extent of the damage to the enamel can be measured at any time. In turn these measurements can be utilised to create an objective view of the development of oral health over time. Because the method is very sensitive and shows even the slightest deviation, action can be taken before it is too late.

ORTHODONTICS AND ORAL QAMERA

Orthodontiste Katja van Oort met Oral Qamera

ORTHODONTICS AND ORAL QAMERA ACCORDING TO KATJA VAN OORT

‘‘Oral Qamera has really changed the profession of orthodontics and that starts with the intake of a new patient. When a patient visits our practice for the first time, I check whether his or her teeth are being brushed properly. In many cases we find that children, and also their parents, are unaware of the value of thorough brushing so we try to make them aware of this. Then we commence measuring the braces. The funny thing about first training them to brush better is that you immediately build a nice bond.

IT IS AS AN INVESTMENT IN THE RELATIONSHIP WHICH IS REIMBURSED.

Oral Qamera is invaluable while wearing the braces. At every check-up, I check whether the patient is still brushing properly just by taking a QLF photo. Especially at the first check after placing the braces you can see exactly whether the dental plaque build-up is under control. And the great thing is that the automatically generated hygiene score has a strong motivational effect. Children are quite digital, and images are having a larger impact than just explaining. In the photo, children see exactly where they need to brush and clean better. For me this is the modern, simple and effective way to replace a chemical plaque disclosing test. With Oral Qamera a patient can be monitored much better, and also a file is maintained easily over time. Just one example: a girl comes in with a rather dirty mouth: hygiene scoring a bad 5. After discussing the photo with her she directly understands the importance of brushing better at identified spots. The remaining orthodontic treatment has been so ‘clean’: she only had 0 dental plaque scores! Today I can’t imagine working without Oral Qamera anymore. You always have up-to-date images of your patients, giving confidence and motivation.

TRIPLE WIN

Tripple win Oral Qamera Pen in de tandartspraktijk

Oral Qamera has a positive impact on society, the clinical world and the consumer. It is a triple win. Below we explain why.

THE SOCIETY

If we, as a society, want to keep healthcare affordable, adjustments in our behaviour will be necessary. This means that the focus should be on preventing diseases rather than curing them. The world of dentistry is no exception, even here the emphasis will need to be placed on prevention. With the arrival of Oral Qamera this is entirely possible. With this new technology, plaque and cavities can be detected quickly, easily and safely. Earlier detection ensures that the chance of drilling is kept to a minimum. Oral Qamera also allow dental experts to accurately monitor oral health so that a patient file is automatically built up. By actively deploying Oral Qamera, in the EU alone we can save EUR 52 billion in costs directly related to dentistry every year. And all the other costs that arise from problems in the mouth have not even been mentioned.

THE CLINICAL WORLD

Oral Qamera is the solution to improve servicing all different target audiences. With children aged 5 to 25, it becomes possible to take brushing to a higher level by providing targeted advice and brushing instructions based on QLF photos. Oral Qamera is the best way to build a long-term relationship with this specific group. Older patients, who have not visited their own dentist for a long time, can be actively approached to become familiar with Oral Qamera. All this under the message of ‘new style dentistry’. Involving this group with dentistry practices again, will ensure that these people can enjoy their own teeth for longer and will significantly decrease the risk of other health complications. Then there is one group that is really terrified on the dentist. Based on Oral Qamera, we have developed a protocol which makes it possible for this target audience to find their way back to the dentist. We do this by emphasizing preventive action instead of invasive action. Oral Qamera ensures that the clinical world can optimize care and simultaneously grow sustainably.

CONSUMER

Brushing smarter reduces the risk of cavities. Fewer cavities means benefiting longer from your own teeth and fewer health complications later in life. Oral Qamera will soon be introducing a smart scanner for consumers that can detect young dental plaque. This means that you will know within eight hours whether you have brushed properly. Knowing that, the consumer also knows if he must pick up his toothbrush, pick his teeth, etc., again. Brushing in an improved matter also means that one is less anxious to go to the dentist, because you know that you have done everything to keep your teeth in paramount (top kan ook, vind paramount mooier) condition. In addition, by keeping your teeth healthy you decrease the chance of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s for example.
